1. Designing is a balancing act
There is no universally correct way to map out an agentic workflow; the architecture must follow the use case. Designing these systems requires a deliberate balancing act between deterministic constraints and probabilistic freedom.
A purely deterministic workflow — a rigidly predefined path — limits the adaptive reasoning that makes AI agents valuable in the first place. A purely probabilistic workflow invites hallucinations, infinite reasoning loops, and unreliability.
Successful agentic design means wrapping a probabilistic “brain” in deterministic “rails.” Strict JSON schemas, explicit API contracts, and robust workflow orchestrators (such as the ReAct loop) are how organisations safely harness the unpredictable nature of generative AI.
2. Bounding autonomy and authority
An agent’s capabilities must be strictly bounded upfront. Designers must decouple an agent’s action-space — the range of tools, databases, and sub-processes it is permitted to access — from its autonomy, which dictates its freedom to decide when and how to act.
Organisations are responsible for the actions taken by their agents. Bounding these risks early means giving an agent only the exact permissions necessary for its specific task. Autonomy must be treated as a deliberate, ring-fenced design choice rather than an inherent property of the system.
3. Structuring operational data and quality gates
Agents cannot compensate for inconsistent system records or unclear data ownership. Agentic reasoning fails without clean, reliable information as its input. Establishing a clear source of truth with standard naming conventions and consistent schemas is a foundational challenge. Beyond that, deterministic quality gates — such as requiring a confidence score of 85% or higher — should sit between extracted data and any downstream action an agent is allowed to trigger.
4. Standardising tool access and protocols
For agents to be useful, they must connect seamlessly to enterprise systems. Emerging standards such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocols give agents a shared, secure language for communicating with external data sources, applications, and one another — replacing the brittle, custom-built integrations of the past.
5. Mitigating multi-agent cascading failures
The future of enterprise AI involves specialised agents collaborating with each other. In these setups, a mistake or hallucination by a single agent can escalate quickly as its outputs are passed downstream. System architecture has to account for orchestration drift — agents interacting without a shared grounding context — and semantic misalignment, where two agents interpret the same instruction differently and act in conflict.
