Singapore Disability Sports Council

Goals

The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) team had these goals in mind:

  • Enable public and members to get most up to date information on SDSC and it’s activities
  • Highlight achievements of Singapore’s disability sport athletes – their star performers
  • Entice prospective volunteers to join SDSC
  • Provide an online payment alternative for prospective donors
  • Enable web team to easily manage website content

What we did

We needed to fully understand the unique proposition that SDSC will offer its users. And to do that we researched competitor websites, discussed vocabularies, explored branding and most importantly focused on reducing redundant, outdated and trivial content, also known as ROT.

We ended up with the following user-centric enhancements:

  • Chunked content. We sliced and diced the content to provide only that information that would be useful for the users; we stayed away from SDSC propaganda! This took the most time to get done, and in the end it was well worth it.
  • We provided an intuitive navigation scheme so that users can browse through the content without getting lost. For example, we used “direct” vocabulary for the main menu navigational elements (who we are, what we do, how you can help, etc.). This was chosen because we found it to be the most intuitive for the primary users of the website: members of public.
  • Look and feel. We went through almost 3 full designs to try to communicate the essence of SDSC and its mission. In the end, it the discussions paid off SDSC and we learnt a few things in the process. The colors and the visuals were chosen to communicate grit, determination and fulfillment.
  • Photo gallery. This kept coming up in all our discussions, so it was quite natural to think about offering this feature on the website so that a visual history or events, athletes, etc., is maintained for all to cherish.
  • Standards compliant. Needless to say that we designed the website with web standards: XHTML and CSS.
  • Web content management system. To help all of the content to be easily managed, we used a content management system to hold all the templates and the content.
